Further consultation is to be carried out on the best location for a new road bridge over the River Tweed in Peebles.

Scottish Borders Council's environment and infrastructure committee agreed to studies of three possible routes, all towards the eastern end of the town.

Councillors were told the current bridge would reach capacity by 2020.

Local councillor Nathaniel Buckingham said that there was an element of urgency but the process should not be rushed.

A survey last year found two-thirds of residents were in favour of a new bridge.

Council planning officers believe a new crossing is needed in Peebles to cope with any further housing expansion south of the river.
