Group sought over Hawick Hornshole statue vandalism

Police are trying to trace a group of people seen near Hawick's famous horse monument around the time it was vandalised.

Four men and a woman were seen in "suspicious circumstances" near the Hornshole memorial between 02:00 and 03:00 on Saturday.

Lothian and Borders Police are keen to speak to any member of the group and have urged them to come forward.

A piece of the statue's flagpole was snapped off in the incident.

The High Street monument commemorates the Battle of Hornshole in 1514 which is celebrated in the Borders town to this day.

Police said the vandalism was "difficult to comprehend" for local people.
