Scottish Borders police station closure plan fears

A Scottish Borders councillor has raised concerns at moves to close some of the smaller police stations in the region.

If approved by Lothian and Borders Police Board, stations at West Linton, Innerleithen and Newcastleton would be shut, and the hours cut in Peebles.

Tweeddale councillor Gavin Logan said people would feel they were losing out.

Police have said they recognise local concerns but would rather close buildings than reduce officer numbers.

The proposals have been put forward as part of plans to make significant cuts from police spending in the region.

The stations involved have been selected according to usage levels.

However, Mr Logan said there were concerns about the plans in the areas affected.

"I just think it is a great pity," he said.

"We can't claim that these stations are busy, particularly Innerleithen, West Linton and Newcastleton, but they are part of the community.

"If they are closed, they will be sorely missed."
