A jobs task force has met in Castle Douglas to support 35 workers affected by the closure of a food factory.

Buccleuch Foods is relocating its meat packing operation from the area to Midlothian as part of a merger with Campbell Brothers.

Officials from Jobcentre Plus, Dumfries and Galloway Council and Scottish Enterprise are part of the task force.

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown, who organised the meeting, said the job losses were "devastating" for the area.

The food firms announced their merger plans earlier this month.

They said the move was "eminently sensible" in what was a "very competitive sector".

Mr Brown said he hoped incentives could be offered to new businesses which might be considering opening in the town.

He said people wanted to "see action" and did not want the task force to be simply a "talking shop".
