Lauder pensioner flees from flat blaze

A pensioner is being treated in hospital after a fire forced the evacuation of several homes in the Scottish Borders.

Emergency services were called to The Row in Lauder at about 0200 GMT.

One flat was well alight and its occupant, a 72-year-old woman, had fled from the property and was being cared for by neighbours.

She was taken to Borders General Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

A police spokesman said there were no concerns for the woman's well-being.

He added that there were no indications yet as to the cause of the fire.
