Police have appealed for witnesses after a 22-year-old man was killed in a road crash in the Borders.

The incident happened at about 1325 BST on Saturday on the A701 road about half a mile north of the junction with the A72 in Peeblesshire.

A Vauxhall Nova was travelling south when it was in collision with a Peugeot 307 heading north.

The driver of the Nova died at the scene. Two people in the other vehicle required hospital treatment.

Police said a 22-year-old man and 20-year-old woman in the Peugeot were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with injuries which were not life-threatening.

The road was closed for about five hours while officers carried out an investigation.

Police are now appealing for anyone who was on the road and witnessed the collision to come forward.

A spokesman said: "We are still trying to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident and would urge anyone who saw the collision to contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone with information that can assist with our enquiries is also asked to come forward at once."
