New Scottish cheeses launched in US
Two new Scottish cheeses are being launched in the US as part of a major drive to promote dairy products from Scotland.
The move marks a new partnership between US food importer Atalanta and Scottish Development International.
The Connage Dunlop and Orkney Smoked Red cheddars will bear the new Scottish Dairy brand.
SDI said the brand had been developed in part to meet increasing US demand for products with Scottish provenance.
It includes the launch of an exclusive logo that will be added to premium Scottish dairy products in the US.
The new Scottish cheeses are being launched at a food show in New York.
Several more products will be introduced to the US within the next few weeks, joining the Mull of Kintyre cheese which Atalanta already distributes.
Scotland Food and Drink chief executive James Withers said: "The launch of the Scottish Dairy brand with Atalanta in the US market is a major milestone for the dairy sector.
"During the Summer Fancy Foods Show in New York, we're showcasing Scotland's larder to buyers from across North America, who are not only interested in our most famous exports like Scotch whisky and salmon, but also in the breadth of other world class products we have.
"The new dairy export brand allows the industry here capitalise on this increasing international interest."
The Scottish Dairy brand is an industry-led initiative which stemmed from a review of the industry by Scotland Food and Drink two years ago.
Scottish Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing said: "We know that Scotland is home to some of the best dairy producers and now people across the US will be able to buy some of our favourite cheeses.
"Scottish food and drink is booming - with exports of our produce worth £4.9bn in 2015.
"People recognise that a Made in Scotland brand means high quality, tasty food and now dairy products will benefit from that brand.
"I hope that our dairy sector will now be on the same platform as Scotch beef, salmon and whisky."
