A dramatic thunder and lightning storm lit up parts of Scotland overnight.

The east coast experienced the worst of the weather in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The areas affected included Aberdeen and the north east, Edinburgh and the Lothians, Dundee, and the Scottish Borders, bringing torrential rain along with the thunder and lightning.

Many people posted photographs and videos on social media after the storm struck.

Scott McKeand, 32, who captured a shot of the lightning in Aberdeen, said: "I was woken up by the first loud clap of thunder and noticed the flash of lightning. My first thought was to grab the camera and tripod."
