Thieves who stole shortbread worth £15,000 were scuppered after they wrongly filled the lorry with a cleaning fluid instead of diesel.

The culprits only made it about half a mile before the lorry and trailer broke down following the theft from Midmill Industrial Estate in Kintore.

Caledonian Logistics, which owns the lorry, said security cameras showed four men filling the diesel tank.

The thieves had to abandon the vehicle and its contents.

The incident happened at about 12:30 on Saturday.

Police have urged anyone who believes they may have seen something suspicious to contact them.
