A major search for a fishing boat which has gone missing in Aberdeenshire with two people on board has been stood down for the night.

The 16ft creel boat failed to return to Gourdon harbour.

An RAF helicopter from Lossiemouth was joined by lifeboats from Aberdeen and Montrose and fishing boats in the search for the vessel, which was reported overdue just before midday.

Coastguard teams from Carnoustie and Montrose have also been involved.

'Thick fog'

By early evening, the search was extended from the original two miles offshore to the helicopter going 20 miles out to sea.

Calum McNichol, watch officer at Aberdeen Coastguard, said: "We are carrying out an extensive search.

"Rescue resources were quickly on scene and we have asked vessels in the area to help.

"The sea conditions are moderate and visibility is poor, due to thick fog."

The search is due to resume at first light.
