A major bridge on the A90 in Aberdeen has been closed due to a gas leak.

The Persley Bridge over the River Don was shut at 18:30 on Tuesday, causing tailbacks on the only other crossing at Bridge of Don.

Engineers are in place carrying out emergency repairs on the bridge, which will remain closed to all vehicle traffic for two days.

Police said there was no risk to the public from the gas but advised that delays were expected.

A spokesman for Scotia Gas Networks said: "We apologise for inconvenience to motorists - we will be doing everything we can to make the repairs as quickly as possible."

Traffic had been an issue in the area already, especially at the nearby Haudagain roundabout, with Mugiemoss Road closed for up to four months for safety reasons as part of a new housing development.
