A man has admitted setting fire to three business properties in the Orkney island of Sanday.

Leonard Cairns, 52, set fire to a garage, a shop and a store shed at the village of Kettletoft last September, Kirkwall Sheriff Court heard.

Twenty-two people had to be moved to safety.

Legal proceedings are ongoing against the principal victim of the fires, a local businessman who is facing charges of sexual offences.

The alleged victim in that case cannot be identified.

Procurator Fiscal Sue Foard said that those allegations went some way to explaining the reason for the actions of Cairns.

He was released on bail and will be sentenced in March.

Sheriff Graeme Napier warned that a jail term would be a likely option.
