Investigations are under way at a burnt-out Aberdeenshire cottage to determine whether anyone died in the fire.

Grampian and Tayside fire crews were called to the blaze outside Fettercairn just before midnight.

Police said it was unclear whether the elderly female property-owner was home at the time.

The one-storey cottage in Balfour was badly damaged as a result of the fire. Three fire crews attended the blaze.

It was put out just before 0100 GMT.
