NorthLink's new freight ferry is to be named Helliar after a small Orkney island, it has been announced.

The vessel will enter service as a replacement for the Clare in January, to be a sister ship to Hildasay, which joined earlier this year.

The name Helliar was suggested by postman Dave Ridealgh, 47, of Evie, Orkney, in a competition. He said he was "delighted".

The Helliar will be renamed from its current title Clipper Racer.

NorthLink commercial director Cynthia Spencer said: "Helliar Holm is a small island near Shapinsay, which the ship will pass on the run into Kirkwall Bay, so the choice of name is particularly appropriate."
