Man dies in hospital after crash in Lewis

A man has died in hospital following a crash in Lewis in the Western Isles on Wednesday.

The collision involving his campervan and a van happened at about 10:30 on the A858 between Carloway Bridge and the Doune Braes Hotel.

Fire crews were called to the scene and Stornoway Coastguard helicopter, which was on exercise in the area, flew the 72-year-old to hospital in Stornoway.

The A858 was closed to traffic for about 16 hours following the crash.

The man, who has not been named, died in Western Isles Hospital earlier on Thursday.

A 60-year-old female passenger in the campervan, the 51 year-old driver of the Ford Transit van and his 31 year-old male passenger were uninjured.

Police have appealed for information.

Sgt David Miller said: "Our inquiries are ongoing into the cause of this crash, and we are appealing to any witnesses, or anyone driving on that road around the time of the crash who has dash-cam to contact us."
