Retired rescuer wins prestigious mountain culture prize

Retired Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team member Noel Williams has won this year's Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture.

The former high school teacher is the writer of mountain guidebooks, a founding member of the Lochaber Geopark and a hill runner.

Mr Williams, of Torlundy, is the 12th recipient of the prize.

It will be awarded on 23 February during the Fort William Mountain Festival.

Previous winners include mountaineer and broadcaster Cameron McNeish, skier and adventurer Myrtle Simpson and the late Cairngorms ecologist Dr Adam Watson.

Andy Nisbet who, along with climbing partner Steve Perry, died in an accident on Ben Hope last week was also a previous winner.
