A soldier who admitted knocking down four of his colleagues with a car near an army base has been fined £600.

Kristofer Smith had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving following the incident in Ardersier, near Fort George, on 19 January 2015.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that the road was wet and there was a low winter sun at the time.

Smith, 33, also had five penalty points added to his driving licence.

The soldiers were out for a morning march when they were hit by Smith's Volkswagen car and injured. One had to be airlifted to hospital for treatment.

Sentencing Smith, of Inverness, Sheriff David Sutherland told him: "It is clear this was made worse for you because it involved your colleagues.

"I take into account the wet road and low sun but we must always drive for the conditions that pertain."
