Lochaber no more with final printing of weekly newspaper

The last issue of weekly newspaper the Lochaber News will be published on Thursday following a deal between its owner and another publisher.

Scottish Provincial Press has reached an agreement with Wyvex Media, which publishes the Oban Times.

The deal will see the merger of the Lochaber News into a new-look west Highland edition of the Oban Times.

Readers of the new edition will be offered free cake to mark the Times' covering a "larger slice" of Lochaber.

The Oban Times already reports on news from a large part of Lochaber. Its new west Highland edition will be available on 6 October.

In a statement on the Lochaber News website, Scottish Provincial Press said "technological and economic changes" meant the Lochaber area could not sustain two local newspapers.

"Both companies agree that Wyvex's closer geographical ties and strength in the market make it the sensible choice to continue to provide local news and services to the people of Lochaber," the statement said.

"As an indication of this commitment, Wyvex has recently strengthened both its editorial and commercial presence in Lochaber and will shortly relocate its current office to a high street presence in Fort William."
