Man jailed for sexual assault at flat in Alness

A man has been jailed for two years after being convicted by a jury of sexually assaulting a woman with intent to rape her at her flat in Alness.

Marian Wiak, 45, of Dingwall, had denied attacking the woman on 7 December 2014 after she returned home from a Christmas party.

Traces of Wiak's DNA were found on the woman's clothing, his trial at Inverness Sheriff Court heard.

He has also been placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Police Scotland said it acknowledged the sentence handed down to Wiak.

Det Insp Andy Logan, of the divisional rape investigation unit, said: "This was a disturbing crime committed against a women by someone who she thought she could trust.

"Following an investigation carried out by the divisional rape investigation unit with support from local officers, Wiak was identified by officers and detained."
