Alert after gas leak at railway bridge in Muir of Ord

A gas leak at a road bridge crossing a railway in Muir of Ord has disrupted train services and shut roads through the village.

The leak, which could be heard as a loud gushing sound, had prevented children at the local primary school from going home.

ScotRail has advised of disruption to services between Inverness and Wick, Kyle of Lochalsh, Dingwall, Ardgay.

A gas main was damaged at about 14:00 and the leak was shut off by 16:30.

The bridge and roads have been reopened.

Gas company SGN said its engineers were dealing with the incident.

A spokesperson said: "Our engineers are in attendance at the scene in our capacity as the local provider of the national gas emergency service to make the situation safe.

"The local gas network in Muir of Ord is owned and operated by ES Pipelines. The network at this location is the responsibility of ES Pipelines, however, we are providing the emergency response for them."
