Teenagers given vote on Lewis estate buyout plan

For the first time 16 and 17 year olds will be allowed to vote on plans for a community buyout of an island estate.

Carloway Estate Trust has proposed taking over the 11,400-acre (4,613.4 ha) Carloway Estate on Lewis.

At a public meeting on Wednesday night, it was unanimously agreed to lower the voting age in the ballot that would gauge support for the buyout.

Teenagers must register to vote by 6 February ahead of postal ballot papers being sent out on 10 February.

The papers will have to be returned by 16:00 on 24 February when the count will be held.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is organising the vote.
