The potential environmental impacts of upgrading 86 miles (138km) of the A96 to dual carriageway are to be assessed.

The Scottish government plans to have the major revamp of the road between Inverness and Aberdeen completed by 2030.

Public agency Transport Scotland has awarded the £130,000 contract for the environmental assessment to engineering company Halcrow.

The firm aims to start work on the contract later this month.
