Five Caithness shops fail under-age drink tests

Police have expressed disappointment that five shops in Caithness sold alcohol to under-age teenagers during a test purchasing operation.

Under supervision from officers, youngsters sought to be served at 18 off-sales premises in Wick and Thurso.

Northern Constabulary also confiscated drink from youths in Thurso town centre ahead of last weekend's operation.

Supt Julian Innes said: "Under-age drinking is a serious issue with long-term consequences."

He added: "It is not just a policing matter however, communities, families and suppliers are key to changing attitudes to more responsible drinking."
