Police have appealed to owners of garages and outbuildings in and around Tain in Easter Ross to check them in an effort to help trace a missing woman.

Johanne MacDonald, 36, from Tain, has not been seen since 21 January and Northern Constabulary said they were concerned for her wellbeing.

The force has received reports of possible sightings of her on public transport headed for Edinburgh.

However, police searches continue to be made in her home area.

Ch Insp Matthew Reiss said: "It is now a number of days since Johanne was last seen and we have obvious concerns for her safety, particularly if she is sleeping rough.

"Although the weather is not as cold as it has been, the temperatures at night are still fairly low, which makes Johanne vulnerable if she is taking refuge in people's garages or outhouses."

Police described Ms MacDonald as being of heavy build, with dark brown, shoulder-length hair which is normally tied back.

She wears gold-rimmed glasses and has blue eyes. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a grey top and an orange watch.
