Inverness Caledonian Thistle player cleared of assault

A Scottish Premier League player has been cleared of an alleged attack on a man inside a Highland nightclub.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle midfielder Lee Cox had been accused of assaulting Greg MacBean at Love2Love in Inverness.

Cox, 20, denied the charge at the city's sheriff court and claimed it was a case of mistaken identity. He said he had seen a scuffle but had then taken a taxi home.

Sheriff Ian Abercrombie found the player not guilty.

Mr MacBean, 29, told the court he was assaulted while trying to take a photo of friends in the VIP room of the nightclub.

He claimed he lost a tooth after being struck three times in the face.

He said he did not see who threw the punches, but saw a friend grab hold of Cox before the footballer left the club.

Cox said he did not know Mr MacBean and had not punched him.
