A 24-year-old man has been arrested after Hearts player Barrie McKay was hit by an object thrown from the crowd during Thursday Scottish Premiership match against Celtic.

TV footage showed forward McKay being struck by what looked like a plastic bottle as he was taking a corner in front of the Celtic home support.

Police Scotland said a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal and inquires were ongoing.

McKay, 26, signed a two-year deal with Hearts in September after being released by Swansea City.

The Scotland cap spent last season on loan at Fleetwood Town, having moved to Nottingham Forest from Rangers in 2017 before joining Swansea a year later.

He came through the youth system at Kilmarnock but was released as a teenager due to a hip problem.

A Celtic spokesman said: "Clearly such behaviour has no place at Celtic Park. We have already been in contact with Hearts. The club will also investigate the matter fully and we will take the appropriate action."
