Ram-raiders steal ATM from Hamilton convenience store

Three Lanarkshire shops have been targeted by ram-raiders using a Land Rover Discovery.

At about 03:10 the car was used to crash into the Pennysave Store in Udston Road, Hamilton, and the thieves managed to steal a cash machine.

There had been a failed attempt at about 01:50 at the Spar Shop in Stonehouse, and another at 02:50 at Westwood Stores in East Kilbride.

Police want to speak to anyone who saw the car, which was damaged at the rear.

The Land Rover Discovery was recovered shortly afterwards in Stoneymeadow Road, Blantyre.

The car, which had been set on fire, will undergo a full forensic examination.

Det Insp David Cockburn said: "Our inquiries carried out so far have revealed two men were in the car and both were wearing dark-coloured clothing.

"The car sustained damage to its rear and a tail light was smashed out so I'm appealing to anyone who may have seen the vehicle to contact us, perhaps you remember seeing the car damaged and the light out."
