Elderly woman and dog killed by car in Ayr

A 97-year-old woman and her dog have died after being hit by a car in South Ayrshire.

The incident, involving a grey BMW car, happened on Holmston Road in Ayr at about 16:55 on Sunday.

The woman was taken to Ayr Hospital, where she died a short time later. Her Jack Russell was taken by police to a local vet, but died en route.

The 55-year-old male driver was uninjured. Police Scotland have appealed for witnesses.

A spokesman said: "An inquiry is under way into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Irvine police office on 101."
