The death of a 27-year-old man in Lanarkshire is being treated as murder, detectives have said.

Police officers were called to a property in Hamilton's Donaldson Street at about 23:55 on Tuesday. They found the body of Joseph McMenemy, who is thought to have lived there.

A post mortem examination was carried out later and its findings indicated that Mr McMenemy had been murdered.

Officers have appealed for information about the "violent" death.

Det Insp Rory Hamilton said: "Extensive inquiries are underway to establish the circumstances of this incident but we need support from the local community to find answers for Joseph McMenemy's family.

"If you were in the surrounding area late on Tuesday evening and saw or heard anything suspicious we would like to hear from you.

"I am confident that somebody must know something about who is involved and I would appeal to anyone with information to come forward and speak to us as a matter of urgency."
