Murder inquiry launched after Greenock street death
Police have launched a murder inquiry after the death of a 23-year-old man in a street in Greenock.
Officers were called to reports of a disturbance in the town's Belville Street at about 23:20 on Wednesday.
They found the man seriously injured and he died at the scene. A post-mortem examination will be held to establish the exact cause of death.
Police are believed to be following a positive line of inquiry. They have appealed for witnesses.
Det Insp Alan McAlpine, of Police Scotland's major investigation teams, said: "We are currently trying to establish the events leading up to the disturbance in Belville Street which ultimately resulted in the death of this young man.
"It is vital that we speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of Belville Street around 2320 hrs last night and may have witnessed activity there, or perhaps seen the suspect or suspects running off."
