Police are hunting a thief who threatened staff and stole money from a shop in Dumbarton.

Two members of staff at Townend Stores in Townend Road were left badly shaken by the incident, which happened at about 11:30 on Thursday.

The suspect made off with a three-figure sum of money and headed towards Dumbarton town centre.

The man, who was about 5ft 8in, wore a purple and blue checked waterproof jacket and dark tracksuit trousers.

He also wore a top with a hood drawn tight so that it obscured most of his face.

Police Scotland said they were reviewing CCTV footage and they believe the suspect was loitering outside the shop before he committed the crime.

Det Con Vicky Barrett said: "We are carrying out door-to-door enquiries in an effort to find out more information on the suspect, we know he was acting suspiciously outside the store before committing the crime.

"We are also aware of a passer by stopping to speak to the male member of staff after the suspect fled and I'm appealing for this person to contact us.

"If you have any information or knowledge about the suspect or the crime, please pass it on."
