Jail for man who hid prison drugs under stamps

A man has been jailed for sending cannabis to his brother in prison by hiding the drug under postage stamps.

Steven Ferguson, 32, from Glasgow, hid small quantities on letters sent to Kilmarnock Prison.

He was caught after a sniffer dog at the jail detected the Class B drugs, which had a street value of about £5.

Ferguson was jailed for 16 days at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court after he admitted posting cannabis into the jail between January and February last year.

Simon Brown, defending, said Ferguson's brother was serving a sentence at the prison and threats had been made against him to smuggle drugs.

Mr Brown added: "He was a man who was under considerable family pressure and decided to do the minimum he could to mitigate the situation."

Sheriff Shirley Foran said her hands were tied over sentencing Ferguson, who had been charged under the Prison Act rather than the Misuse of Drugs Act, which attracts higher penalties.
