A 43-year-old man has been beaten and slashed by at least four other men in a street attack in North Ayrshire.

The victim was assaulted while walking in Frew Terrace, Irvine, at about 23:55 on Saturday.

He returned home and raised the alarm before being treated for his injuries at Kilmarnock's Crosshouse Hospital, from where he was later released.

Police said the men who carried out the "vicious and unprovoked attack" were all believed to be in their early 20s.

Det Con Alex Greig, of Police Scotland, said: "The man had been out for the night and was making his way home when he was attacked for no apparent reason by a group of men, all believed to be in their early 20s.

"It was a vicious and unprovoked attack which only stopped when it is believed one of the men recognised the victim and urged the others to stop."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland.
