Probe after train hits bike on track near Johnstone
An investigation has been launched after a train from Ayr to Glasgow was damaged by a bicycle on the tracks, causing delays to other services.
British Transport Police (BTP) believe the black mountain bike was thrown from a footbridge above the line near Johnstone, Renfrewshire.
Officers were called at about 18:20 on Tuesday after it was struck by a train between Milliken Park and Johnstone.
BTP said throwing items on to tracks was "stupid" and "extremely dangerous".
Det Con Jim Duncan, of BTP, said: "We believe the bicycle was thrown onto the line deliberately and it is vitally important that we identify those responsible.
"No-one was injured but that does not change the fact that throwing anything onto the train tracks is not only stupid, but extremely dangerous.
"Officers carried out a widespread search of the area but did not find the culprits."
He said the bicycle was being forensically examined and officers were conducting house-to-house inquiries and looking at CCTV footage in a bid to trace those responsible.
