Sex offender Richard Smith jailed over child images

A sex offender who downloaded images of children from a naturist website while he was under restrictions has been jailed for two years and three months.

Richard Smith, 29, from Kilmarnock, admitted possessing indecent images at his home between May 2007 and April of this year.

Smith was placed on the sex offenders' register for 10 years.

And he was also handed a sexual offences prevention order banning him from social access to the internet.

The prevention order means police will be allowed to check Smith's online activity.

Phone access

He is also forbidden from deleting his search history and banned from contacting other sex offenders and having any contact with children under 16 unless supervised by an adult.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard that Smith was able to access the images legally on a mobile phone even though he was being monitored by police and social workers.

Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane described the situation as "worrying".

When Smith was caught, the phone was found to contain pictures of naked children as young as six.

The court heard Smith had seven prior convictions for sexual offences and was being monitored by an offender management unit.
