Ryan McCarron, 17, detained over Glasgow machete raid

A teenager who robbed a Glasgow newsagents armed with a machete and knife has been detained for 27 months.

Ryan McCarron, 17, admitted stealing £900 from the Local Shop Newsagents in Dumbarton Road on 6 May last year, while acting with another person.

The High Court in Glasgow heard how he was caught after a police sniffer dog located a balaclava, gloves and machete which had traces of his DNA.

McCarron was told he will be monitored for 12 months on his release.

The court heard that during the raid McCarron threatened to stab the shopkeeper and that his accomplice told a customer: "Get back or I'll stab you."

'Terrifying' experience

McCarron then struck a laptop with the machete, destroying it, before making off with the cash.

Sentencing him, judge Lady Stacey told McCarron: "This must have been very terrifying for the shopkeeper and the customer.

"I am concerned that you are appearing at the High Court at such a young age.

"You have a supportive family. You should take the chance to get your life off the track it seems to be on."
