Teacher jailed for having sex with pupils

A married Glasgow teacher has been jailed for a year and two months for having sex with two pupils.

Muir McCormick had admitted four sex charges involving the girls, aged 16 and 17.

Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard how the 39-year-old seduced the girls in a cupboard at Bearsden Academy where he taught maths.

He targeted the older girl between August 2007 and May 2008 and the other girl from December 2008 until May 2009.

The court heard that he would take his victims separately into the cupboard in his classroom two to three times a week to carry out sexual acts.

He was caught after his first victim told her landlady about what had happened with McCormick at Bearsden Academy. She then told her parents and the police were called.

Police raided his house and took away computer equipment which led them to his second victim.

The court also heard that McCormick, who hopes to continue his relationship with his wife, told a psychiatrist at first that he didn't think he had done anything wrong.

Accepts guilt

Sheriff David Hall said: "This is a gross breach of trust, you claim you were unaware what you were doing was against the law.

"For a teacher and for a teacher of your experience I found this most disturbing and quite incredible.

"You and you alone are to blame for what happened."

He said a custodial sentence had to be imposed.

McCormick's defence lawyer Kenneth McGowan said: "He's fully accepting of his guilt."

McCormick will now serve a year and two months in custody and a further supervision order for three years was imposed.

He was also placed on the sex offenders register for a period of 10 years and banned from using or possessing a computer which provides access to the internet.
