Andrew Sandford jailed over 'horrific' child images

A nurse who was caught with some of the worst indecent images of children ever seen by police experts has been jailed for four years and five months.

Andrew Sandford, 37, was caught with 12,270 images of children and babies being sexually abused and raped, and involved in sex acts with animals.

He downloaded the material on a laptop computer at his home in Glasgow between November 2006 and September last year.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Turnbull said the images were horrific.

The judge told the former staff nurse at Glasgow's Victoria Infirmary: "The nature and detail of the conduct perpetrated against young children and babies which features in your collection of images is quite shocking."

Lord Turnbull said that the use of the term indecent images "sanitises and disguises" what was truly involved.

'Horrific abuse'

"These are visual records of the actual and truly horrific sexual abuse and rape of children and babies by adults," he said.

The judge said he had to take into account the significant number of images of the most serious type found and the lengthy period over which they were downloaded.

He told Sandford, who has since been removed from the nursing register, that he would have faced a five and a half year prison sentence but for his guilty plea.

Earlier the court had heard how Sandford was caught after Strathclyde Police received intelligence that he had accessed a website with indecent images of children via the internet from his former family home in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire.

The married geriatric ward nurse told police that he may well have accessed the images through "a chatroom type thing".

Advocate depute Alison Di Rollo told the court: "Police officers have reported that this case involves some of the worst material they have ever seen."
