A murder inquiry has been launched after a 56-year-old man was found dead in the east end of Glasgow.

The body of Andrew Alexander was discovered at his flat in Hillfoot Street, in the city's Dennistoun area, at about 2320 GMT on Saturday.

Police said his death was being treated as murder following the results of a post-mortem examination.

Officers are trying to establish Mr Alexander's last movements and have appealed for information.

Det Ch Insp David Gailey, from Strathclyde Police, said: "Officers are continuing to carry out door-to-door enquiries and study CCTV footage in an effort to gather more information on this crime.

"At this stage of the inquiry, the last contact we are aware of with Mr Alexander was during the late afternoon of Friday 28 January 2011.

"It is crucial to the investigation that we build an accurate picture of his movements from then, until he was discovered on Saturday night, and I would therefore appeal to anyone who knew him, or may have been in contact with him to get in touch with police as a matter of urgency.

"I would also appeal to local residents who may have seen something suspicious or out of the ordinary to contact police, as they may have unwittingly witnessed something that is vital to our murder investigation."

An incident room has been set up at Baird Street police office.
