Cumbernauld shop murder bid inquiry launched

Police are investigating an attempted murder after a 41-year-old man was subjected to a "vicious attack" in a Cumbernauld shop.

The victim was seriously assaulted by two men who had followed him into Glenhove Stores in the town's Glenhove Road at about 1020 GMT on Thursday.

The man was taken to Monklands Hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries.

His condition was described by Strathclyde Police as "serious".

Following the attack, the two men left the shop and ran onto Glenhove Road in the direction of Millcroft Road.

'Vicious attack'

One of the suspects was wearing a dark jacket, while the other was wearing a red and black ski jacket. Both men were wearing dark hats and concealed their faces with dark scarves.

One of the men was of a medium build while the other was described as stocky.

Det Con Michael Reynolds said: "This man suffered a vicious attack which has left him with serious injuries.

"The area around the store is residential and I feel sure that someone may have seen or heard something in relation to the incident.

"I would urge them to come forward with any information, either about the incident or the people responsible."
