A woman whose body was found on waste ground in Airdrie on Sunday morning has been named by police.

The body of Karen Hughes, from Viewfield Road in Coatbridge, was discovered by a member of the public walking his dog in an area known as The Moss, near Moss Side Avenue in Airdrie.

Strathclyde Police said it was treating the 24-year-old's death as murder.

The officer leading the inquiry said it was believed Ms Hughes' body had been at the scene since Saturday.

Det Supt Alan Buchanan urged anyone who was in the area between 1700 GMT on Saturday and 0800 GMT on Sunday to contact the force.

"We are following a number of lines of inquiry in relation to this murder," he said.

"An incident caravan has been set up near the scene, and members of the public can speak to officers there about any concerns they may have and also to provide information."
