Police have launched a murder inquiry after a man was fatally stabbed in a residential part of South Lanarkshire.

George Mathieson, 22, was attacked in Howieshill Road close to Glebe Place in Kirkhill, near Cambuslang, at about 1330 GMT on Wednesday.

Up to four men are believed to have been involved in the disturbance.

Officers are looking for a white man, aged between 18 and 20 years old, with light coloured hair, in connection with the attack.

Det Insp Alan Bankier, of Strathclyde Police, said: "Mr Mathieson was attacked in broad daylight, in a residential area, therefore I'm sure that someone must have witnessed the incident.

"Perhaps someone who was at the local shops or someone looking out of their window from flats nearby may have witnessed the disturbance taking place."
