A historic building in North Ayrshire has been badly damaged by fire.

The blaze broke out at the A-listed Ladyland House, near Kilbirnie, just after 2100 GMT on Tuesday.

Up to 60 firefighters from Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and Glasgow used breathing apparatus and aerial pumps to bring the fire under control.

Damage was limited to the first and second floor bedrooms and a small section of the roof space. No-one was injured in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation is under way.

Ladyland House was designed by the Glasgow architect David Hamilton and was built between 1816 and 1821.
