Security guard in hospital after being abducted by gang

A security guard has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries after he was abducted by a gang who stole a digger from a building site.

Four men broke into the yard in Catacol Grove, East Kilbride, assaulted the guard then bundled him into their white van on Wednesday night.

The 52-year-old was later found in the abandoned van and taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock.

Strathclyde Police has asked for anyone with information to come forward.

The force said that the gang stole the large yellow digger and drove off in that and the van, along Auldhouse Road, but crashed and abandoned the digger near Broadbent Farm.

'Horrific and senseless'

The group then drove the guard a short distance in the van before leaving him and the vehicle near Langlands Golf Course.

They then sped off in a red Seat Leon car.

Police arrived on the scene soon afterwards and found the man in the back of the van, and weapons nearby which were thought to belong to the suspects.

The victim was taken to hospital where staff have described his condition as stable.

Strathclyde Police appealed for information about the incident, which happened at about 2129 BST on Wednesday.

Det Insp Paul Swinburne said: "This was an horrific and senseless attack on an innocent working man and I am determined to find the people responsible for this attack.

"After the suspects made off from the white van they got into a red Seat Leon with a partial registration believed to begin with SD07.

"I have no doubt that there were witnesses to this."

The suspects were wearing camouflage-style clothing.
