A man is fighting for his life and his wife has been seriously injured after they were stabbed by two men who broke into their house in Renfrewshire.

The 38-year-old woman suffered cuts to her arm at her home in Saucelhill Terrace, Paisley, just before 0500 BST.

She called to her 37-year-old husband who came downstairs and tried to detain the men. He was attacked and suffered serious injuries to his head and body.

Police said the couple require surgery and have appealed for witnesses.

The suspects are described as white males, in their mid-to-late teens, and were both wearing dark clothing.

Det Con Allan Muir, of Strathclyde Police, said: "This was a very traumatic experience for both householders who were both injured during the incident.

"I would urge anyone who saw these men either entering the premises or making off, or anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the incident and who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously to contact us."
