The parents of a five-month-old baby boy, who is believed to have drowned in the bath, were known to social services, BBC Scotland understands.

The child, named locally as Aaron Egan, was discovered in a flat in Kilmarnock at about 2025 BST on Friday. Police are treating his death as "unexplained".

His parents are believed to have convictions for possession of heroin.

The BBC understands the baby had been on East Ayrshire Council's at risk register but had been taken off it.

Social workers were providing support for his parents' drug problem and the council said it would initiate a significant case review.

A post-mortem examination was due to be held on Tuesday.
