Police are investigating an attempted robbery at an Edinburgh bank by a man carrying a fake bomb.

The incident happened at a TSB in Clerk Street at about 13:30 on Monday.

The suspect is of heavy build, with tanned skin, 6ft to 6ft 2in tall and aged between 50 and 60 years old. He possibly spoke with a Russian accent.

He was wearing a black furry hat, a black coat with buttons up the front, black leather shoes and a brightly-coloured scarf.

The man left the bank empty-handed after staff called the police.

He made off in a taxi which he had hired at Waverley Station after arriving on a train from London King's Cross.

Police said he was dropped back off at Waverley and paid his fare before boarding the 14:19 to Manchester Picadilly.

A suspect was arrested in Manchester Picadilly on Tuesday in connection with another case.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
