Police have launched an investigation after residents were evacuated from a "suspicious" tower block fire in Edinburgh.

The fire service was alerted to the blaze at Citadel Court on Admiralty Street in Leith at about 22:00 on Monday.

Six people were treated at the scene for the effects of breathing in smoke.

The fire is thought to have started in a stairwell on the fifth floor of the 20-storey building.

It was brought under control by midnight.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in Edinburgh are investigating following a suspicious fire in Leith.

"Emergency services attended and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the flames, with occupants of neighbouring properties evacuated as a precaution."

Inquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police.
