Pensioner punched while helping girls in Midlothian

A pensioner was punched in the face while trying to help two girls get away from a gang of teenagers in Midlothian.

The man in his 70s was attacked by a male member of the gang aged between 15 and 17 at about 21:40 on Tuesday in High Street, Loanhead.

He sustained a face injury and was treated at the scene.

The victim had been asked by two girls for help after they said they were being "harassed" by the group.

The attacker is white, with light brown hair and is of large build. He was wearing a light-coloured jacket.

Insp John Dryden, of Police Scotland, said: "This was a violent attack upon a vulnerable individual who was acting as a good Samaritan.

"We are eager to trace the person responsible for this attack, along with the other members of the group.

"Anyone who witnessed the attack, or recognises the description of the suspect, is asked to get in touch with us as soon as possible."
