Police investigating the alleged rape of a young woman at a bus stop in Edinburgh city centre have said they are satisfied that no offence occurred.

The attack was reported to have happened in Lothian Road, opposite the Waldorf Astoria hotel, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police Scotland said that, following extensive inquiries, there was no evidence of a crime having taken place.

Det Ch Insp Alwyn Bell thanked the public for their assistance.

He said: "I would encourage anyone who has been a victim of a sexual offence to come forward and speak to police.

"Dedicated officers will investigate all reports thoroughly and sensitively, with specialist support a priority."
